East Carolina University is hosting its annual Relay for Life at North Campus Recreational Complex, Friday, April 12, at 6 p.m.
Relay for Life is an overnight fundraising walk that raises money to research cures for all types of cancer. During the event, survivors of cancer celebrate by taking the first lap. Candles are lit after dark to remember those who lost the fight, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those who are still fighting.
To date, Pirate Relay has recruited 83 teams consisting of 1,259 participants and has raised $63,634.94. Their goal is to raise $100,000.
In 2011, Pirate Relay raised $107,000 earning them second place in the state of North Carolina among colleges participating in Relay for life. Funds raised in 2012 totaled $83,000.
For the past four years, East Carolina University and North Carolina State University have set aside a week to compete against each other in an online competition to see who can raise the most money. ECU has won the past three out of four years!
Competitions aside, it’s great to see communities come together to help support a common cause!
See why others relay!
